Winter is great for snuggling up indoors with a good book, but it’s also a fantastic time to hike! ESPECIALLY in the magical Murramarang National Park.

From crisp air to peaceful trails, there are numerous reasons why you should consider strapping on your boots and hitting the trails during the winter months.

1. Peacefull trails

Fewer crowds flock to the south coast in winter so the trails are quieter and chances are you won’t see another soul for kms at a time. This means peaceful walking and stunning beaches all to yourself.

You can immerse yourself completely in the beauty of nature without distractions or stress and you’ll also have your pick of accommodation and car parks. What a bonus!

2. Cooler Temperatures

Say goodbye to sweat patches, chafing and sunburn. The mild winter temperatures on the south coast typically sit at a top of 15-18 degrees which is the ideal temperature for hiking comfortably. You still have to slip slop slap but you can be out and about all day, soaking up the sights and the sunshine without getting uncomfortably hot.

3. Less Bugs

Unlike warmer months, winter hiking means fewer buzzing insects to bother you along the way. Say goodbye to swatting away mosquitoes and freezing off ticks, and hello to uninterrupted outdoor enjoyment.

4. Get out of Your Comfort Zone

Hiking in chilly conditions can make it more of a challenge to get out the door in the first place. But once your feet hit the trail, you’ll start feeling like an intrepid explorer!

Conquering a challenge with your body and mind instills a sense of accomplishment like no other. And embracing the cold weather and brisk air will leave you with an unmatched sense of pride and satisfaction.

5. Unique Wildlife Sightings

Winter on the South Coast of NSW sees a number of migratory creatures arrive on our shores.

Humpback and Southern Right Whales arrive in mid May and can be seen throughout the winter months cruising up the coast.

The best place to see these massive creatures if from a high ocean headland or cliff and there’s no better place to find those than Murramarang National Park!

If you’re lucky you might even spot a an Orca cruising the coast looking for whales to hunt.
