Remote and seriously good

The Louisiade Archipelago is situated between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Within the Louisiades lie a chain of atolls called the Calvados Islands. This chain is our destination and an awe-inspiring place to paddle. These islands feel isolated like a place time forgot. The native people still live in grass huts relying on a subsistence lifestyle of fishing and farming. They travel by dugout canoe and sailing outriggers and are some of the friendliest people you could ever meet. If the charm of these people is not enough, the islands themselves offer just rewards for the adventurous traveller. Imagine paddling into the lagoon of an atoll atop azure waters and iridescent corals to a storybook ‘South seas’ style island with white sandy beaches, overhanging coconut palms and friendly locals welcoming you. This is the reality of the Calvados Islands. Most of the islands are only a few miles apart allowing for relative ease of travel and choice of which beautiful island to camp on.

As idyllic as the islands might sound, this destination is remote and arguably one of the world’s last great sea kayaking frontiers. It is a true expedition and only for the adventurous soul. As a member of the expedition team, you will be required to chip in and help out to make this expedition a success.

2025 plan

DAY 1

AM flight to Alotau and airport pickup. Team briefing at Napatana Lodge. Team goes to buy provisions in the local market, we pack food, equipment and prep kayak gear.

6pm Welcome banquet dinner at Napatana Lodge. Pack personal items. Twin share accommodation provided.

DAY 2

Early AM departure aboard small boat to the Eastern end of the island (approximately 4 hours). Unload gear, setup camp, rig kayaks and spend the afternoon getting your kayak and snorkels ready by exploring on and in the water.

DAY 3-9

Paddle west along the Basilaki and Sideeia island chain, camping on idyllic beaches, snorkelling vibrant coral reefs and visiting homesteads and villages. This may include cultural activities / displays organised in collaboration with local communities which could be cultural dances, cultural practices, fishing and Sail / Kanu demonstrations.

DaY 10

We usually make our way to Nuli Sapi retreat by motor boat, however it is possible to paddle there under perfect wind, swell and tide conditons. On the way we have the opportunity to visit Keaton Church (a historic site the first build in PNG) and snorkel with Manta Rays near Gona Bara Bara island (tide permitting). Once at Nuli Sapi you can unwind in traditionally styled lodgings.

DAY 11

Small charter boat ride back to Alotau. Twin share accommodation is provided at Napatana Lodge.

Farewell dinner included

DAY 12

AM dropoff at airport, flights back to Port Moresby and home.
